Providing Feedback > iKnow

Identify a recent lesson that you have taught and pull out three pieces of student work that you have reviewed and where you provided feedback.

You have been provided with three classroom cases below to view and respond to discussion prompts at the end of each one. Click on the case to expand it and view the video and discussion prompts for that case.

View the following video classroom case and respond to the discussion prompts at the bottom in the discussion panel with your mentor.

male teacher going over homework with african-american student
  • Discussion Prompt 1: Think of your current practice of giving feedback to students. How might you use previous assessment data to group students and individualize your feedback?
  • Discussion Prompt 2: How can you use leading or open-ended questions to provide feedback to students (as opposed to giving the answers) and enable students to learn independently?

Classroom Case 2

View the following video classroom case and respond to the discussion prompts at the bottom in the discussion panel with your mentor.

female teacher looks at student work with students

  • Discussion Prompt 2: What might you have done differently to make it more effective?

Classroom Case 3

View the following video classroom case and respond to the discussion prompts at the bottom in the discussion panel with your mentor.

female teacher works with individual student on self assessment

The first classroom case made me realize how little I really look back at data from previous lessons to help tailor the feedback with students on an individual basis. I just don't know if I can do individual conferences after each assignment to go through the feedback with them.

Joe Mason: I wouldn't worry about trying to have a conference after every assignment. Try thinking about specific points in the unit where it makes sense to stop and take inventory on where your students are.
